Bar Marmont

Bar Marmont

Right next to the Chateau Marmont sits this popular local watering hole. This place is best known for attracting both the rich and famous, as well as those who want to be near them. Like no other bar in town, different rooms all share an otherworldly aura. You can have dinner but most come to drink and stare. The drinks, by the way, aren't inexpensive-be prepared to pay top dollar for that libation.

Sky Bar

The hottest celeb bar in town is also one of the most exclusive. Situated atop the ritzy Mondrian Hotel, long lines wait for a shot to enter this very common, yet comfortable cocktail lounge. Guests at the hotel are guaranteed entry. The space itself is very low-key and open-air. Stars mingle with their friends amid gorgeous city views. If you can get in, it is worth the experience. There is no cover, but drinks cost a staggering USD18 each.

The Poxy

Once considered the "home away from home" of Guns 'n Roses, this mainstay rock 'n' roll hangout is a great place to catch some live, loud music. Frequented by both music industry professionals and commoners, the joint has a great sound system, several full bars and, best of all, excellent vibes. You can almost feel the music history coming out of the walls. For those who like the rough and tumble, the front of the dance floor is often transformed into a mosh pit when high-octane bands perform. Call for schedule. Cover varies. This is an all-ages venue, so ID is required if you want to purchase alcohol.

Goodbar

Part bar, part dance club, this Hollywood hot spot has become a major attraction for the young and the hip. It caters to those who like to dance and socialize into the wee hours. Located on the ultra-busy Sunset Strip, this club offers a large dance floor surrounded by booths and an enormous bar. The music is loud so be prepared to read your date's lips. Most nights offer a mix of techno, pop and hip hop. A full menu is also offered.

The Derby

This class-A east-of-Hollywood club has been at ground zero of the swing revival since the very beginning. Located at a former Brown Derby site, the club was restored to its original luster and detailed with a heavy 1940s edge. With Big Bad Voodoo Daddy as the onetime house band and regular visits from Royal Crown Revue, hep guys and dolls knew that the Derby was money even before Swingers transformed it into one of the city's most happenin' hangs. But if you come on the weekends, expect a wait to get in, and once you're inside, dance space is at a premium.

Whisky a Go Go

This place is truly steeped in the very roots of rock history. In addition to being the joint that spawned the term "Go-Go Girl," legendary acts like Jim Morrison and the Doors used to play here as did Janis Joplin and Buffalo Springfield. Rock 'n' rollers still, to this day, flock to this modern-day Mecca. It is not an overstatement to call this the premier hard rock club in Los Angeles, if not the entire world. Try the upstairs area to get away from the crowd and get a different vantage point.

B. B. King's Blues Club

Nestled away in CityWalk's commercial plaza, this three-level club/restaurant--the ribs alone are worth the trip - hosts plenty of great local and touring national blues acts and is a testament to the establishment's venerable namesake. There's no shortage of good seating, but if you find yourself on the top two levels, it's best to grab a table adjacent to the railing to get an ideal view of the stage.

Sugar

Wednesday through Saturday, clubgoers pack this popular Santa Monica spot for its great dance clubs. If you're into funky house or soul lounge, try Lollipop or Chocolate on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively; hip-hop and funk are the musical fare on Friday at In the Raw; or you can escape to the world of progressive house, trance, and Euro electronica at Pure on Saturday.

O'Brien's Pub

This warm, homey bar is a great place to actually meet new people. The scene here isn't pushy or driven by ego, as is the case in so many bars in town. Instead, it's a popular hangout frequented by those more impressed with a warm smile and a cheery disposition. The beers flow every night and it's on the cool part of Main Street, where you can walk to nearby restaurants if you're not feeling ready to operate heavy machinery.

The Cat n' Fiddle Pub and Restaurant

There is a little bit of England to be found in Hollywood. Here, the outside patio is situated around a fountain and is a great spot to people-watch while downing some of England's finer brews. In cooler weather, heat lamps warm up the scene. Inside there is a large bar and the entire place is also a restaurant featuring U.K. menu favorites. As a watering hole, however, you can't find a cooler pub this side of the pond.
