Hollywood Sign

Perhaps the most famous sign in the world - and Hollywood's chief landmark - 50-foot letters spelling HOLLYWOOD sit on the westernmost edge of Griffith Park. Built in 1923 to advertise a land development called HOLLYWOOD-LAND, the structure was intended to be only temporary; despite the subsequent loss of L-A-N-D, the sign has instead become the city's official cultural monument. When first built, the wooden sign was illuminated nightly; today, rebuilt in steel, it's lit only for special occasions. You can view the sign, from many vantage points in Griffith Park by driving straight up Bronson Avenue or Beachwood Canyon, or from the Hollywood Reservoir walking path.
