Los Angeles Airport - LAX

A major travel hub for the Pacific Rim region, Los Angeles International Airport - usually called by its three-letter code, LAX - is the third busiest airport in the world. It's about 30km (20mi) southwest of Downtown LA. If you can, try to avoid LAX gridlock by flying into one of the region's domestic airports: Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport (BUR) is about 25km (15mi) northwest of Downtown, Long Beach Airport is about 40km (25mi ) south, John Wayne Airport/Orange County (SNA) is about 65km (40mi) southeast in Santa Ana, and Ontario International Airport (ONT) is about 65km (40mi) east. With all these options, finding a flight or connection to just about anywhere on the continent is never a problem. Departure tax is included in the ticket price.

More likely than not, you'll be picking up a rental car at the airport. All of the Major Car-Rental Companies keep extra-large fleets in the neighborhood immediately surrounding the airport and operate their own complimentary shuttles to and from the terminals. When you exit the baggage claim area, simply step outside to the outer curb, where a green-and-white sign will indicate the waiting area for rental-car-company shuttles; most companies circle every five to 10 minutes.

Comfortable and reliable door-to-door shuttle service is offered by SUPERSHUTTLE (310/782-6600 or 800/554-3146). Expect to pay between $15 and $35 (plus tip) per person, depending on your destination. Reservations are unnecessary for arrivals, but they're a must for your return trip to the airport. Also, be prepared to stop for other passengers (and expect an extra-early pick-up time on your return trip.
